Moses and Aaron’s sister is referred to as the Prophetess of Joy and Creativity, and Diviner of Water for Israelites. This inspired Gissen to design her famous Miriam’s cup, using glass, bronze, and colorful enamel.
Miriam plays and active role in the story of Exodus. The sister of Moses and Aaron, she is probably the unnamed sister who watches over the infant Moses when he is placed in the Nile River to save him from slaughter by the Egyptians. She plays an important role as the prophetess and leader when the children of Israel leave Egypt and cross over the Sea of Reeds. The theme of water as a source of life, protection, and power is present in the stories surrounding her.
Miriam is viewed by many as a role model of women’s empowerment in Jewish society.
